Tupper Lake, NY – A citizen’s group which last winter successfully reopened Big Tupper ski area in New York’s Adirondack Mountains has announced plans to reopen another chairlift, this one reaching the top of Mt. Morris.
Adirondack Residents Intent on Saving Their Economy (ARISE) President Jim LaValley in late June announced the group’s intention to reopen Tupper’s Chair 3. While the lift will provide access to only one additional ski trail, along with Chair 2 and the Mitey-Mite which reopened last year, Chair 3 will make nearly the entire mountain below the lift accessible to skiing and snowboarding for the first time since the ski area was shuttered 10 years ago. Chair 3 rises to the top of Chair 1, which would be the only lift still not running following Big Tupper’s rebirth.
LaValley further explains that the expansion of operations will likely require a revision to the group’s permit from the Adirondack Park Agency (APA), along with additional trail work for volunteers, increased insurance requirements and additional ski patrol equipment. The lift will need to pass state inspection, but Lift Manager Cliff Levers successfully got Chair 3 running last winter and is confident that the lift can be running for the 2010-11 ski and snowboard season.
LaValley indicates that the increased lift operations provided by Chair 3 will not force a lift ticket price increase from the current $15 a day.
