Skiing in Miami Now Has Only a Snowball’s Chance

Miami, FL – Prospects for indoor skiing and snowboarding in South Florida have melted away now that a developer has backed out of a snow dome proposed for North Miami.

Three months after first announcing its intention to transform a 193-acre site at Biscayne Landing into an indoor skiing venue dubbed Solar Mountain, the Solar Mountain Management Group has abandoned its plans over disputes with the site’s trustee over several key provisions.

In April, Solar Mountain’s $30 million bid for the property was selected by mortgage holders to acquire the property from Wells Fargo Bank. Since then, the developer has been negotiating with the city of North Miami to reduce its off-site financial obligations.

In addition to the snow dome, plans for the site had called for a hotel, surfing, skate park, tennis center and arena. Developers had hoped to break ground on the project next year and open in 2013.
