Tafton, PA – Two days before an April auction date a buyer stepped forward and purchased Tanglwood Ski Area in eastern Pennsylvania.
The buyer, however, won’t be identified until the sale closes later this summer, according to real estate auctioneer John Cowley of Scranton, Penn.’s Cowley Real Estate Auctions. It’s also unclear whether or not the buyer will maintain the 85-acre property as a ski area.
After 40 years in operation Tanglwood closed for the 2007-08 ski season before reopening for 2008-09 and 2009-10, when it reportedly lost $50,000 in its final year of operation. The ski facilities remained shuttered in 2010-11.
Also part of the sale was the resort’s liquor license. The on-site bar turned an $8,500 profit in 2009-10.
The 415 vertical-foot ski area has an upside-down configuration, with the “base” facilities located at the top of the mountain. Uphill transport is provided by two double chairlifts and a rope tow, with a separate rope tow serving a tubing hill.
