Girdwood, AK – Earlier this season we told you that Alyeska was the place to go for deep snowfall this lean winter. That message has now been reinforced as the ski and snowboard resort south of Anchorage in Alaska has already racked up more than 500 inches so far this season, and it’s only early February.

Over 40 inches of new snow that fell last week pushed Alyeska Resort’s snowfall total for the 2011-12 season to 524 inches. Following 88 inches of snowfall for the month of October, an additional 436 inches has fallen since November 1, giving the resort a total snow depth of 134 inches at the top of the mountain.

Alaska is experiencing cooler temperatures than normal and heavy amounts of precipitation this winter, resulting in epic mid-season conditions. Snowfall for this time of season is pacing well above the historic annual average snowfall of 645 inches.

Alyeska Resort is having an amazing ski season so far, especially in comparison to other resorts in the Lower 48. Weather patterns have delivered not only plentiful powder days, but stability has allowed the resort to open up some of the mountain’s outer areas, including Max’s Mountain, which opened to the public from the peak for the first time in the resort’s history on January 21.
