Nashville, TN – Nashville police have charged snowboarder Shaun White with public intoxication and vandalism.
The charges stem from an incident early Sunday morning at the Loew’s Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville in which White, of Carlsbad, Calif., was said to be highly intoxicated. Officers responded to the hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday after reports that White pulled a fire alarm at the hotel which caused the evacuation of all guests. An employee also said that he saw White destroy a hotel phone.
White reportedly attempted to flee the hotel in a cab but an unnamed citizen prevented the taxi from leaving, telling the driver he was calling police. When White overheard their conversation, he allegedly kicked the citizen and fled on foot. The citizen reported that he chased White until White turned and ran into him, apparently causing White to fall backwards and strike his head against a fence. White was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
White was released from the hospital late Monday afternoon and is free on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges on Oct. 10. The citizen declined to prosecute White for assault.
Responding officers on Sunday reported that White appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol.
Arrest warrants charging White with vandalism and public intoxication were issued Sunday morning after he refused to sign misdemeanor citations.
White is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in snowboarding, earning gold in the halfpipe in 2006 and 2010. White has also won a medal at the Winter X Games every year since 2002. At the 2012 edition of Winter X, White became the first person in history to score a perfect 100 in the men’s Snowboard Superpipe. He has won five straight ESPY awards for Best Male Action Sport athlete. He is also a highly decorated skateboarding athlete.
Sunday’s arrest isn’t White’s first brush with the law. In 2008, White allegedly set off a fire extinguisher at the Beaver Run ski resort at Breckenridge in Colorado, where police say that a hotel camera captured the occurrence. Alcohol was also reported to be a contributing factor in the 2008 incident in which White was charged with second-degree tampering.
