Michigan Ski Hill to Remain Closed This Winter

Norway, MI – Owners of Michigan’s Norway Mountain say that it’s time for a “new direction” at the ski hill 10 miles east of Iron Mountain that will not open for the 2012-13 ski and snowboard season.

“I would like to thank every one who has made Norway Mountain such a pleasure to own an operate over the last twenty years,” Norway Mountain owner Mike Gotstein posted to the ski area’s website. “My wife and I truly enjoyed watching this ski hill become part of winter fun for residents of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Six lifts provide access to Norway Mountain’s 500 feet of vertical drop at the “upside-down” ski area that operated through last winter.

“But all things change, and it was not without a lot of thought that we decided not to open this year,” Gotstein acknowledged. “Our lives are taking a different direction and while we will miss all of the excitement and joy Norway Mountain has brought us over these great twenty years, it is time for us to move on. Thanks again to everyone who has made this one of the best experiences of our lives.”
Gotstein could not be reached for comment regarding Norway Mountain’s future, which appears uncertain at this time. The ski area’s Facebook page is filled with comments from disappointed skiers, both longtime patrons of Norway Mountain and new fans alike.
“I seriously think that I’m going to cry,” posted Liz Lundberg Fellows, of Green Bay, Wisc. “We love Norway Mountain. Went at least three times each year. Nice and close to home, had runs for everyone. Felt right at home being there. Not sure where we are going to go now if we want to go skiing for the day.”
