    Stowe's now officially for sale

My bet is that private equity will pick it up for a fire sale and hold it until the market turns. Not sure they'd want to keep it for too long. PE is notorious for cost cutting and building the bottom-line at the expense of quality operations to shine up the financials for sale. You may see a...

    2008-09 Ski Day Count

I had a total of 6 days before contracting pneumonia (twice). Out of order for January through March.... Cancelled a trip to JHWY / Targhee and Silverton, CO. Upside.... saved money? Downside.... too many to mention....

    Shane McConkey

I mean not disrespect to Shane M., Doug C. or even Alan Lowe, but when you start a family, I really think that it is time to ratchet back the risk. We always hear the cliché that "he died what he loved doing", but the fact is that you are dead, and your children and wife will spend the rest of...

    DEEP MT WASHINGTON 2/19/09

Recently I posted some comments on how limited East Coast powder skiing is compared to Western conditions. After watching this video this morning, I sat down to a plate of crow for breakfast. Great snow and great turns!!!

    this is not good

ROG: I admit that I have been skunked out West as many times as I've had epic days. Never had rain though. That seems to be a mostly a Whistler event, or any base below 6K. I am primarily a free heel skier now, so I do have the opportunity to go OB and skin to the untracked. Most of my WY...

    this is not good

I've been out West three times this year and had big powder days two of the three trips (Utah(1) and Wyoming (2)). But they do not have the deep bases either to sustain a long corn season (May thru early July). I skied East Coast twice this year and had experiences of bordom and bad skiing...

When (no BS) Do Eastern Powder Days Compare to Utah?

Man, I am fearful of even jumping into this East-West Coast battle, but I have skied both East and West for over 30 years and I have never had an "Epic" day on the East Coast. Yes, I've been in Vermont during a 18" powder day, about as good as it gets, but never had anything that compares to...

Is PICO's delayed opening a bad omen?

As reported today on this website, Pico has decided to delay opening until 12/20 for the following reason: “The historical low use of Pico Mountain during mid-December and current economic conditions have driven this decision,” said Chris Nyberg, president and general manager of Killington/Pico...

What will $1 per gallon gas do to the ski industry?

Nothing bad!!! Merrill Lynch oil analyst said today the if China goes into recession, which is likely, then oil will hit $25 per barrel and gas could hit $1. I hope that happens, because then I can fill up my Suburban for a mere $40. :D

    Saddleback Resort, ME

Thanks for the Update.... I'm going to wait this one out and see if they survive, or go the way of the Yellowstone Club, Tammarrak and so many other startup projects in this deteriorating financial environment.

Why Intrawest faces an uphill battle

CNBC reported this morning that the exclusive Yellowstone Club has filed bankruptcy. The credit squeeze is going to be a huge problem in the winter resort business where seasonal cash flow makes it absolutey necessary to have creit lines available to operate. Also, bookings are still way down...

    Digital cameras for skiing

I recommend as one of the best small digital camera the Panasonic Lumix series. Panasonic is currently providing all of the bodies for the LEICA digital line, and in turn, Panasonic is using Leica lenses on all of their LUMIX cameras. I bought a LUMIX L1 (their SLR) after looking at the Leica...

    Toddler on Skis

The logistics issue is eaily resolved by hiring a smoking hot au pair (Austrian, German, Italian, Brazilian?) who knows how to ski and is willing to watch the kids on the bunny hill while you're out skiing. But remember, she has to be "smoking hot", or it ain't gonna workout. \:D/

    Obama and the Ski Industry

[color=#FFBF00] Not sure if Cheney does much of anything with his heart condition. Especially at 6500 - 11,000'. I know that he lives in a very exclusive golf community outside of Teton Village. (I don't want to give out the exact location for fear of a black Suburban showing up outside my...
