Yes, it sure was!
Things I didn't fully expect:
* the incredible brightness of the flame [btw, it was burning 5.5 tons of fuel per second]
* the sound was unforgettable and much louder than you might think - the public viewing area was about 1.25 miles away
* feeling the initial pressure wave and follow-up secondary waves

The sound and feel cannot be replicated watching a video or TV screen no matter the sound system. Not that I was at this specific event, but even for smaller rockets this is true.
