BANG!!!

BROAD AREA OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW
ACROSS MUCH OF THE EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO REGION IS EXPECTED TO
CONSOLIDATE INTO A MORE CONCENTRATED BAND OF HEAVY LAKE EFFECT
SNOW THIS EVENING ACROSS THE TUG HILL REGION. THIS BAND OF HEAVY
LAKE EFFECT SNOW IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN NEARLY STATIONARY ACROSS
THE TUG HILL THROUGH LATE TONIGHT BEFORE PUSHING SOUTH OF THE
AREA BY MONDAY MORNING. SNOWFALL RATES OF 2 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR
ARE LIKELY IN THE HEAVIEST PORTION OF THIS BAND. ADDITIONAL
ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 FEET ARE LIKELY IN THE MOST PERSISTENT
BANDS...WITH THE GREATEST AMOUNTS EXPECTED ACROSS THE TUG HILL
WHERE THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO LAST THE LONGEST.

I've read plenty over the years about the lake effect microclimate of the Tug.

But my understanding is that lift service is no more than 500 vertical.

So are these (and previous) pics from a lift served area, sidecountry, or earned turns in the backcountry?

Tony,

Snow Ridge is about 500' vert. When I first arrived there I looked at the slopes you see from the parking lot and said "you've got to be kidding" to my ski companion. I was in for a surprise.

You ride the lift, skate over the top and into a very steep ravine. The best skiing is short and sweet, but it is the steepest tree skiing I've ever seen in New York. There are also much longer low-angle glades at the south end of the ski area, which are nice to hit after the ravine has been tracked up. You can ski both sides of the ravine. This is truly double black diamond terrain.

I would call it "side-country" as there is some trekking to get to the goods (and to get back to the lift). The beauty of Snow Ridge is that hardly anyone skis that stuff. When I was there, only a handful of people were skiing the ravine and just 3 of us were in the southern glades. The other tracks were made by Skimore and his friends. Too bad we didn't meet that day. We skied untracked every single run. We just kept taking it further out. We had to walk back about a 1/4 mile to the lift on the road.

I am going to make an effort to get back there this season. But right now, I'm hunkered down with 8 dogs through New Years. I am caring for many of my friend's dogs for the holidays so my travel is done until Bubba returns.
