Cannon Mt 3/1

After a nice sunny day tour up Cardigan yesterday, it was time to let the big boys play in the powder today.

I've been waiting for six years for there to be enough snow to do what we did today. It has been a long time coming. Enough chitter chatter here is the scoop.

Gpetrics getting deep. In New Hampshire instead of Vermont this time.

The obligatory face-shot sequence. Yeah I'll have some more of that.

This boy is top secret and a pain in the ass to get to. Gpetrics had to take it down. Notice the slough over the cliff face.

Off to Utah in a few days.

I've been reading Cannon reports on FTO for a long time, and this one is by far the best and the first one that would make me excited about skiing there.

Tony, I'd give you a first rate tour any day you want to visit. That being said, it seems to be once in a blue moon that Cannon's base depth and new snowfall line up to create an epic day like yesterday.

I've only had 5 days lifetime at Cannon, I've never been disappointed by the conditions.

Day #6 should be during Ontario Spring Break.

Great report! Where is that cliff?

Cannon is a good mountain. It's my favorite of all the NH resorts. It's historic, has a 2000 vert tram with few waits, Mittersill for some sidecountry, and some classic trails.

Nice report, salida. I didn't stop to take pictures so I am going to reflect back on the day through yours. Your pictures are very representative of what we found Saturday, I am sure we were on some similar lines/aspects. Didn't go near that cliff but did end up doing some twacking

That cliff is buried deep in the wilderness, above and below some local cut lines. I'd be glad to show you some day...

I'll second that. Great pics. I was with riverc0il and Lftgly most of the day. It was amazing. I never knew I'd be able to "Shoot the Cannon"

Tony,
There is a Gestalt to Cannon that can not be captured in numbers. Your stats at spreradsheets don't describe the experience. Just get out there. This winter (and particullary the past few days) have let the true cannon emerge.

Agree 100%. I nabbed a "sick day" there this past Thursday, after upslope conditions dropped another 4-10" of downy fluff on top of the 7-9" of heavy stuff that had already fallen the previous day. Epic in every sense of the word. And I too schralped some a' dem local goodies! And busted an untracked line down Tramline (only 3 other tracks were on it, and they'd taken the 'safe' route!).

cannon would eat you alive tony, even on a foofy day.
Some of you easterners would have been right at home in that frozen granular lower section of the couloir at La Grave today.

I've never questioned Cannon's terrain quality. But as at Baldy, if it's not covered, you' re not skiing it.

i'm reading this link with amusement....where has all this love for cannon been the last 5 years ....where are the weekly reports ? they are not there cause the fact is cannon is not that good on a daily average basis...cannon, while it has good terrain and has amazing road access and fantastic views , is missing one thing....snow....and snow preservation and the ability to hold the snow..
this love fest for cannon is hilarious... yeah, cannon is a great mountain...maybe 5 times a year in an average year...the other times it is a wind scoured, hardpacked out ice cube that makes not enough snow....doesn't mean it is not very good, when it's good....in the once every five year good years, sure you can have a good amount of great days there...but a little reality check and big picture honesty would seem in order here...
i don't think cannon would " eat up crocker"...crocker would not be that dumb to be skiing cannon , with his ability to ski other places ...eat him for lunch???? look at the line he skied and posted on in the report he put up....let's get real here

I could go back another year for the full five years but I think the point was made. But the point is made (I made it myself in my report) that Cannon is not consistent with epic conditions. I think we can all agree that when Cannon does have good snow it is far superior to most other moutains in New England. No more inconsistent with snow fall than any other mountain outside of Northern Vermont. There is a reason I have my pass at Jay Peak instead of Cannon despite an extra 1:20 hours drive time (people here in Ashland/Plymouth don't really understand that though, which I find amusing). But there is also a reason I abandon plans to ski Jay when Cannon is going off.

you made my point... 1 report from this year ( which has been overrated by the way imo ) ... 2 reports from the awful year last year ( and one of em about spirng corn which is really the only time i would ski cannon ) numerous reports from a very good year in 05...that's about it in a nutshell
