Day 20: Paydirt!

(Still photos by Bobby Danger)

I've stared at Calf Rope since the Christmas Day storm waiting for the access gates to the lower half of Supreme Bowl to open. Waiting...and waiting...and waiting...

Today, diligence paid off. First to open was the lowermost gate into White Squaw, which we hit untracked.

We then managed to time it perfectly, arriving at the top of Supreme right as patrol opened the Challenger gate. We sped through and found Calf Rope still untouched.

Creamy, dense and divine. Just what the doctor ordered. And it's on film at 2:03:

This flick was a fun one to make tonight. At 0:37 witness Salida skiing the easternmost chute in White Squaw on old Rossi 4S skinny sticks. Why? "Dude! I'm getting so deep!"  Bobby's dropping into White Squaw at 2:19 - he was being tentative because there was no telling if it was 2" of fresh snow atop jagged granite cliffage at that point. I followed, but he had already shown me where the rocks were and was able to hit it with a bit more confidence as a result. The lower section of White Squaw is seen in the video at 1:57 .

A good 15 degrees warmer today, it felt like a veritable heat wave! The sun even peeked through the clouds from time to time.

Visitors this week will get more chances for untracked as Backside still isn't open -- they're obviously letting things settle in more given the facet layer underneath.

I left after lunch at around 1 pm. I'd gotten what I went up there for, and after skiing so many days through the holidays I was fairly well shot.

I have to say, I'm really enjoying your videos this season.. You have become quite the film maker =D>
I see you have passed all the sill duties to Mr Danger..

 It's a heluva lot of fun to do, actually. I also enjoy putting it together into one feature-length movie during the summer to share with members of the posse (that's how "Winter of Wonder" came about). At least this year I'm saving a version of each individual film without titles before adding the titles, so that this year's full-length movie won't feel like a collection of short films.

I've been carrying two cameras lately, a Canon S3 IS and a Panasonic DV camera. I've lately been giving Bobby the Canon and using the DV camera myself. The Canon can shoot decent video, too, so I have repositories from both cameras available at my disposal when I get back from the hill.

Skiing the easternmost for sure, also notice just prior to that in the clip, Salida's Eastern soul bro GPetrics.

The only one not skiing on "cheaters" , although at 195cm, those 4S are too short for him. Give Salida some 205s and let him rip.

Other thing I've notice in the clip, why the long faces in the chair? Were does gals getting blasé?

Anyhow, nice to see some of your turns Admin, good to see another low 40 skier skiing today and not sidelined. :?

a. I wish I'd realized who it was when Salida introduced us briefly.
b. I wish that I'd filmed his whole run instead of just the exit. I was a bit late getting the camera out when I realized that it was them.

They had to ride a triple with me.

Now we know why they've been keeping Backside closed. This is a capture of the backside cam, ~11am, 12-29-08. It's a bit hard to see, but the fracture line stretches across most of the face.

Still a lot of hang fire in there. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep it closed until they get the upper portions to go.

I'd take some 205s! I put some old solly race binders on the 4S so I can schralp main when the time comes.

The Utah Avalanche Center had this in the commentary. Wondering what elevation is considered "mid-elevation". Should this keep me out of places like BCC? Hopefully it's not a spring style crust, like the 2 weekends I was there in March last year (both before big storms).

"Many of the snow surfaces on the northerlies dampened into the mid-elevations over the past couple of days and are likely crusted over this morning. With careful routefinding, it'll be a good day for sightseeing."

so much good safe touring in mid-elevation bcc it's amazing. given the crust which could just be of the light zipper variety in the trees, you could find some good turns. amazing how warm it can get in utah at all times of winter, throw in some sun and the surfaces can get nasty real quick. southerly aspects could get supportable enough for corn soon if high pressure takes hold like snake creek area, good mid winter corn can be had in there.

Not that I think there's much of a chance, but hate to hear the term "corn" thrown around in late December. I was cool with no new snow given all the stability problems, but I really hoped temps would stay as low as they had to keep things nice and fresh. Guess not.

Consider that your source is an East Coaster who lived here for one season more than a decade ago.

Should I read into your post as meaning I'll find winter snow on just about all aspects above say 8k ft? How do you think Mineral Basin will be? Never had a good run in there, but had some really bad ones that leave you wondering why you dropped in after one turn.

Just trying to get some info before we choose a ski area and what runs to hit tomorrow. Obviously I'll have the answers to these questions in 24 hours but gotta keep busy at the office somehow.

The key for good runs in MB is to be extremely aware of aspect and sun exposure. Carry a small compass if necessary. While you might be dealing with thick chunky monkey on the run immediately opposite the top of the Little Cloud lift, others can be enjoying light powder out in Powder Paradise beyond the Hillary Step. And don't forget that what was good an hour ago may be unpleasant now.
