Ouch. How high up? I had noticed a widespread warm event in the Pacific Northwest that also extended to the usual low altitude places in the northern Rockies of both US and Canada. But I'm surprised it would gotten as high as 8,000 feet in Utah.

On Sunday morning, the snow line was at 8700' and above that it was only 31F. Sometime Sunday night it went to 10K' for a while. We had a total of about 6" in upper LCC, but with a water weight of 2". As Guru Dave Powers says on his site:
The Tram was down as the hill was covered in a layer of ice, and the Groomers were working overtime to re groom the main sections to make the hill approachable. This was a very grim morning, as rain seldom falls like that here, and I can barely remember the last time this happened. ... . So…. what about tomorrow? I can only hope that we get some high density snow overnight to cushion the frozen crustitude that now is wall to wall. The Groomers will provide the best edge purchase and the off trail… well, that remains to be seen.

From today's (1/18/11) avi advisory:
Our rain saturated snow-scape is something else…there are smooth, ice rink rain crusts at the upper elevations, with some surprisingly decent turns on lower angle slopes where an inch or so of graupel stuck onto the ice. But, sharpen your edges and glue in your dentures for the sections of wind scoured bare ice sheets and rough frozen crusts at the mid and low elevations – slides for life are a concern on the steep, icy slopes.

Is it possible that the ski conditions are better in New England than in Utah right now?
It was at Platt this Sunday! I enjoyed my skiing at Utah a week past, but the snow was softer at Platt. I would say that the snow will be equally hard tomorrow in both places, thanks to this freezing rain event.

Good point... in that case I would say the snow was softer this morning on the EC today, but tomorrow it will be much nicer in Utah.

4-8 inches Wed am. 4-8 inches Saturday. Then HIGH PRESSURE for as long as the models can see. Storm track heads way way north into Alaska and leaves the entire West Cost high and dry. Looking like warm along the west coast, hopefully things stay seasonal in the Great Basin...
