Alta January 17

Dumping up here right now though. Right around 7 inches here in Park City at the moment and it's currently pounding. Have a feeling there is going to be a lot more up high as temps are in the upper 20s in town and upper teens at the summits. Visibility is less then a quarter of a mile \:D/

Alta is saying they got 6 over night, and according to the cottonwoods canyon forecast they should get another 4-8 over the day, so you're talking about a minimum of 10 inches. Not so bad for a quick moving storm. I wonder how that snow will adhere to the recent rains you've received.

I'll be there today (Wed 1/19, PM) through Sunday. Green MRG patch on right shoulder. Say Hello if you see me! :-D

I don't remember ever seeing something like this after other rare rain events....
From the Snowbird site this morning:
Due to an unusual weather event at the resort it is highly recommended that skiers and riders stick to groomed runs and recommended routes.

Looks like Solitude is a good choice for me today.

Looking at things from the Wasatch back cant quite figure out what to do. 6 inches on my car 7,000 in Park City. Top of Jupiter reporting 8, but many lifts are on hold. Canyons, all lifts scheduled but most recent update shows 5 inches. Canyons always over reports, I don't get why they aren't reporting at least 7

Should be pretty good - the current storm came in warm and dense - great stuff for bonding to the ice crusts. From today's avi advisory:
By now, the rain is only a distant memory. The rain/rime crust is not. But let’s put this all behind us for now. It’s snowing hard in the Wasatch with snow totals so far of 5-8” of 9-12% density. Provo lags in the west to northwest flow and they have 2-3”. The west to northwest winds are blowing 25-30mph with gusts into the 40s. Even the more protected stations are registering gusty winds. Temps are in the mid teens. Riding conditions will be much improved from yesterday’s slide-for-life conditions on the 45 degree ice rink. The hint will be to go for the ‘dusk patrol today’. Let the intensity of the storm pass on to the east, the storm snow avalanches run and the new snow settle out. For the skiers and boarders, hit the upper elevation low angle slopes so your tails don’t chatter. It’s a whole new outlook on life.

Why is everything on hold? Wind. Or... are the chairs on hold because they feel the conditions could lead to an inbounds avy, or do they want to dissuade people from skiing because they feel the conditions are too dangerous off piste?

I guess this thing is so very rare in Utah.
Rain represents well under 1% of total winter precipitation at Alta. Base areas of the Park City group, Snowbasin etc. probably see more, but it's still rare.

A conditions update for 1/19/11 from guru Dave:
That last little weather glitch was a fluke and will be a footnote in the season, so for those who are thinking of canceling or postponing, I feel confident that hill will be offering excellence going forward. I know that I was clearly reminded, by this last weather blip, how good we have it here in the Powder Vortex of the Wasatch!!!
