Day 17: Storm Day One.
I woke up at 5 a.m. yesterday and looked outside to see it absolutely nuking.
6:17 a.m.
By the time I got the snowblower out to clear the driveway less than an hour later there was nearly a foot:
7:10 a.m.
Roads in the Salt Lake Valley were an absolute disaster. My normal 17-minute drive to Alta turned into 45 minutes, and the road up the canyon wasn't really that bad -- a lot of that time was lost on the city streets.
The day started out with AmyZ and Evan of Wasatch Snow Forecast. We were joined by mbaydala on our first run, just off the top of Wildcat on Warmup. You know that it's gonna be a good day when of your first 10 turns of the day, five of those are your first face shots of the year. It was hard to stop, so we kept barreling down past the angle and onto my first decent of Collins Face for the year. We reconvened at Wildcat absolutely giddy at our good fortune.
I didn't take any action photos yesterday, so here's one of Evan that he posted to Wasatch Snow Forecast.

mbaydala's video edit from yesterday
The second run was nearly identical to the first, except that we picked up Skidog and lost Evan and mbaydala. It would remain the three of us until we bumped into mbaydala right before lunch -- he was leaving, and Evan had already left.
Riding the Kitty
It stayed scary quiet yesterday. Note the three-quarters empty parking lot and the three empty chairs behind us on Collins...and this was at 10:20 a.m.! It seems that if folks were going to skip out on a day of work this week they opted for Tuesday.
A happy Skidog and AmyZ
3:28 p.m. back at my place -- compare this to the 6:10 a.m. picture above!
After a predicted lull in the action yesterday in the mountains (while it kept snowing all day in the Valley), the storm wound up its intensity again overnight. I've picked up somewhere around a foot and a half at the house and Alta is now at 27" and counting from this storm, with more expected throughout the day today. It's going to be a cold one, but today's gonna rock!
Now it's time to go clear the driveway again.
