On Saturday, 3/29, I skied Heavenly, California only as Sky chair the usual way to get to NV was closed due to wind and signs prohibited hiking which I heard takes 15-20 minutes. I felt sorry for anyone skiing below 8500 feet as snow was wetter even at 8000 feet at base of Groove, Patsy's and Waterfall chairs. I thought about doing the Gunbarrel 25 that was held and did get over 25 runs at Heavenly this day, but only three were The Face where GB25 was held. I only rode soggy Gunbarrel chair once as I parked 7 spaces away from the snow by the tram and rode inside it twice. By the end of Sat. Heavenly had 2-3" new on top of groom in many places. I did the long traverse to Ellie's many times and the lower half skied great while I found some icy spots if I came in too high. Also found some good and new snow in groomed and mostly overlooked Ridge Bowl and in trees on run to skier's right near bottom of Canyon chair. Vertical was 28K even though I took a lunch that included two stops at cabin, one at computer store that was supposed to be open and said they repaired iPhones and a stop at McDonald's because you can get a double cheeseburger, fries and a drink for under $4.

On Sunday, 3/30, Kirkwood, CA reported 18" new although some of it may have been been skied on Sat. We did not get there early enough as we left So. Tahoe at 8:15 when we should have been on the road at 7:30, but I still found a lot of untracked. We parked near Timber Creek base and I was on lift at 9:45 for a quick low-angle lap, but Tony Crocker and Liz had to endure a slow ticket line and I had a short wait for them to join me at 10. Kirkwood had experienced a feeding frenzy. I thought that after a moderate to long line at both Timber Creek and Cornice, we would find untracked by hiking a little to looker's left in the corner of Wagon Wheel Bowl. But not only did we find this area mostly skied out, we lost Liz who froze up facing traverse across very large and steep cornice. When we got to bottom, the Cornice line had gone down so we went up it and stayed high to the right and did traverse and short hike towards the Palisades. We found untracked at the top that was a little sun-affected, but still skied well.

We moved to The Wall and skied Notch Chute where I took off my almost new Super 7s and downhiked the very top to avoid rocks. Tony Crocker left his skis on and was barely able to stop a young boy from sliding through entrance to chute. We next skied The Wall towards Eagle Bowl, but instead went over Norm's Nose, close to the top and down N-face, the first time this year I've been that high in that area. I lost Tony on way to Chair 2 and T-bar where the line was long enough to allow you to catch your breath from climb between the two lifts. I found some untracked by going along the ridge at the top and going to the right. I repeated Norm's Nose, finding more good snow and uncovering a couple of rocks, then repeated the T-bar, but went even further along ridge for more untracked. Finally I skied to the base on untracked W-facing High Whiskey to Cornice Cafe where I told Tony and Liz to meet me, but it has closed for season. I quickly looked in other likely lunch spots before going back up the Wall and skiing around the back to chute that is really a small bowl at the top and took a sporting entrance. I finished my day with four laps on Cornice chair including one down Sentinel Bowl to the base of Timber Creek and ending with another hike towards Palisades where I found room for another set of tracks and some good snow on the top and N sides of ridge. Quit at 4 PM with 19K

The chowder, starting with that first run, was tough on me. I told tseeb after the Notch Chute run that I would head over to the backside and ski with Liz the rest of the day, figuring I would hold him up. This was a correct call as I skied all of 10,800 vs. tseeb's 19K for the day.

Liz did quite well on her own after that first run. She next went up chair 11 and skied the upper Wall and Eagle Bowl, which were much softer than when we got there half an hour later. She was in line at chair 2 when I called to set up a meeting. From 2 she took the T-Bar and skied mostly untracked snow down to the lunch shack at the base of chair 4. We went up chair 4 and the poma together and skied the trees near the eastern boundary. Then up 3 and the T-bar to ski lightly tracked snow back past chair 2 to the base. We got to the closed Cornice Grill ~2:20 and went into lunch at Off the Wall 5 minutes later. It was well past 3PM when we got out of lunch, so we skied Sentinel Bowl to the car and left Kirkwood about 4PM. We got home just after midnight with a nice dinner stop at Harris Ranch.
