Greek Peak 12/10/05

A full week of snowmaking conditions assisted by lake effect snow and a fast-moving noreaster enabled Greek Peak to turn the lifts this weekend (opened friday for the season).

There were 2 1/2 runs for advanced skiers, and 1 run for novices. They had the learning area open with the magic carpet running. It was a great day to learn how to ski/ride and a great day to make turns with friends.

With 6 days under my belt on alpine skis, I was ready to free the heel and free the mind. It was wonderful to get back on the tele's.

We skied many laps off chair 1 on Iliad and Eleysian fields. Conditions were firm man-made, some death cookiers. Good coverage overall. Natural conditions on the right of Eleysian Fields made for some softer snow punctuated with bare spots, grass and rocks. Odyssey and Olympian had been poached but the coverage was marginal, 7" of light snow. Ski patrol did not seem to be bugging people for going over there. The natural snow was nice, but great care had to be taken. Turn only where no one had turned and you were fine. Some people had ventured into the woods, however, they really weren't ready. At least Pam and I made it less dangerous this fall by moving all the downed limbs that could've made for disaster. We did take a peak in there, but it had been skied to the ground and was not quite ready. It might have been nice before anyone had tracked it up.

The usual suspects were Pam, Bubba, Shelley, the tele-posse and a bunch of other Greek Peak regulars. It was great to get back there and ski with old friends (even after 3 days of skiing in fresh fluff in Utah! see Western Forum)

I telemarked for longer than any other free-heelers. After 2 hours they were done. I stayed another 2 hours and tried to keep up with the locked-heeled alpine-skiers, though my legs got tired and my technique began to suffer. I think the Utah training grounds last week really helped build my ski legs, but telemarking really tested their limits. I'm heading back out to GP tomorrow to ski with the rest of the posse and work my telemark muscles.
