SICK SICK SICK! best lift serviced day of the year, easily. though it was only 6-12" and usually the former of that spread, it was fresh untracked all day. started the day off by going knee deep a few times in valhalla, that will wake you up quickly!
definitely a nice way to start the day!
i got a slow start in the morning forgetting that even though it is a weekend, powder hounds would still be out en mass. as a result, i had to wait for the third tram of the morning before getting to the top of jay peak. but just as well, because as i come out of the tram building, none other than awf170! figured i had missed hiim, but my dilly dallying in the morning paid off. great to meet you austin and thanks for the company! i only wish i had your ability and drive for skiing when i was your age.
as mentioned, the day started out in valhalla with occasional knee deep but mostly that magical 6-12" range. kept working lines to get the maximum untracked. 4-6" is what they actually got since close of the previous day by my estimation, but it was deeper in either drifted spots or where yesterday managed to escape untouched (not a lot of that). we worked the mountain over pretty good, the groomers are starting to ski reasonably well except the main routes that are wind blown down to the groomer tracks. most of the main routes through the woods were well packed down but lots of scraped sections could still be found. 6" of dust was pretty much sitting on everything this morning and the main glade routes got tracked out by noonish. so we just avoided the areas that were tracked out. it didn't take much work to ski untracked nearly open to close with exception of hoping onto groomers in between shots.
snowed till about 2 when the sun came out and the wind started roaring. i think the tram got the plug pulled around 2-3pm. it definitely wasn't running when i packed it up shortly after 3pm.
went without my elbow pad for the first time today and the elbow felt great all day! actually, i think the elbow pad was causing me some discomfort which resulted in my previous short days. i took a few minor falls today and held up wonderfully. perhaps the beauty of the day was attempting to come down skier's left of green beret which was HORRIBLY rocky, there just wasn't a line. i successfully nailed a right hop turn without a pole plant, then got cocky just as i nailed a rock that released my binding sending me flying but leaving my ski stationary. someone saved me a climb up the 40ish degree pitch thankfully, as i couldn't kick in steps due to the glazed over base under the fluff. i would recommend skiers right. below the main pitch on beret was great soft snow and launching off the rocks felt awesome! i really pushed myself today considering, but i couldn't help it, i was floating on air and lines were opening up every where. just a sick sick day despite the only moderate snow fall totals over night.
not sure what i am doing tomorrow. think i will take tomorrow off to rest up since the snow stopped around 2pm and i don't think they will get a ton more fresh for tomorrow, and go back weds-fri.
EDIT: to add pictures. Pano of Jay from the Bon Quad
by the way, if you think this season has sucked, you haven't been paying attention. i am looking to have double digit powder days for the season by the end of this month despite a three week lay off for injury.
