Ski Map North America

A couple of threads this winter referenced a ski map that I keep on my PC as a reference.

One summer, when I had way too much free time on my hands , I crafted a map of North America using Microsoft Streets and Trips that shows the location of every ski area that I could find reference to in the U.S. and Canda. Double-click in the map on any ski area icon and you get the name, address, and web link. Click on the web link and it automatically opens the ski area's website in a web browser window. Zoom in down to street level.

Experimentally, I've put a rudimentary version of the map on the web here:

http://www.firsttracksonline.com/skimap ... merica.htm

That page includes a rudimentary overview map, with a set of links to regional enlargements. The regional maps don't name the ski area, per se, but do link to the ski area's website (if it exists) by clicking on the icon. Mousing over the icon displays the website in the status bar, thus hinting at which ski area it is.

Also, for those who own Microsoft Streets and Trips, there's a link on each page to download the full interactive map to your PC.

Feedback is welcome.

You might want to consider migrating your ski map platform to Google Maps or Google Earth. I provide links below to the site that does both for solar eclipses.

Google Earth has the fantastic flexibility of zoom and tilt that we have all enjoyed, and Mr. Jubier has been able to embed solar eclipse paths into Google Earth kmz files: http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/So ... Earth.html , along with selected local circumstances along the eclipse centerline.

GoogleMaps has a more primitive zoom and no tilt, but has much more capability to embed your own input into the map: http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/So ... eMaps.html . Here Mr. Jubier has made it possible to click on any point of the map and display local circumstances for that point.

I have no personal knowledge of how to use either software in this way, but I'm sure admin or someone else here will take up the challenge in the off-season (for those of you that have an off-season )

this could be re-inventing the wheel, here is one site that already has the mapping thing done:
http://www.skibonk.com/ski/index.jsp

i have seen it done on other sites too.

Did a quick look at this site. It's interesting (open-close info and link) but I found way too many errors and missing ski areas when I zoom in in Quebec.

Marc and Frank (Quebec only) are definitely more accurate. Frank has all knows ski areas in Quebec.

Here are the links to Frank's zoneski / Google Earth Quebec maps that I posted in another thread.

Frank also made a map based on Google that includes all of the Quebec ski areas (including some that weren't members of the ASSQ).

The maps on Zoneski:

Provincial Map:

Lower Laurentians:

Laurentians / Launaudière:

Eastern Townships:

Mauricie (North of Trois-Rivières, or Three-Rivers as my dad would say):

Quebec City area:

Outaouais (North of Ottawa):

And yes, there are a few ski areas in Northern New Brunswick that aren't on your list.

Look at all these people making maps and their not even geographer.

OK, this is very much in beta (for example I don't like the type of icon used), but here's a Google Earth overlay of the ski map data. Right-click the download link below and "Save target as", then just open this file in Google Earth. For those unfamiliar, Google Earth is a free download at http://earth.google.com/ .

Too many errors to be useful, IMO. It's apparent that they just used the mailing address post office for many locales -- it puts Sundance in the middle of Provo, for example.

It's also much better than ski bonk one for the info.

Notice some errors and missing ski areas in Quebec, you could get the info from Frank's Map. He has all known ski areas in Quebec (don't think any our missing) and I only noticed one error (you have the same error).

Edelweiss is not at the right spot, that's Vorlage (you don't have that one).

When I have time, I can try to point some other errors if you want.

Picky Picky... :-({|=

Nice job with Google Earth. Saves a lot of time finding areas on Google Earth.

You reference Bear Mt. in SoCal to Bear Valley, which is on route 4 in the Sierra. Surprising becasue you have Bear Valley itself done right.

I'd like to reiterate the props for admin's skimap.kml file. I had previously spent 15-20 minutes hunting down some ski areas on Google Earth when I needed to look at topography or exposure. It's a piece of cake now with the pins in the skimap.kml file.

I'm waiting for admin to expand his horizons. It took me over half an hour to find Las Lenas on Google Earth when I got home last year.

I'm working at it, however the last places I did prior to my California trip was the Yukon and Saskatchewan.. so Argentina isn't next.
