Stoneham, QC 3/19/03

I was surprised by the weather difference between Vermont and Quebec. Today was a perfectly clear but barely reached freezing at midday. While the two ungroomed runs I tried were hard or crunchy, the weekend temps had not climbed as high as in Vermont.

Stoneham reminded me of Snow Summit at home. Vertical is about 1,200 feet and nearly everything is intensively groomed with state-of-the-art equipment to create a packed powder surface without the chunks or boilerplate I encountered at Jay.

Groomed run fall lines are more consistent than Snow Summit's. Stoneham also has a well-maintained terrain park, though it is not as big as Summit's.

This was the first day of the NASJA 2003 annual meeting. We spent that night at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City and the next three nights at the Manoir Richelieu in the Charlevoix

I did not take pictures at Stoneham but on the way back to Quebec City, I detoured to Montmorency Falls, which I found fascinating.



I did see ice climbers on the falls but not in any of my pictures.

I'm not sure if any of these people were preparing to climb.

This was my closest approach to the falls.


Often these rivulets would form and run across the surface of the snow.

They moved fast so I kept my distance.

These were my first digital pictures so resolution is low.
