Powder Day/Night Greek Peak 1/22/05

What a day. In fact, it was the best powder day of the season here in central NY.

It wasn't difficult to convince my friend Tom to blow off his work today to join me for one of the best powder days of the season. Got out to the slopes around 2pm. It took a bit longer to get there today, as the roads were slow going. The snow kept pouring out of the sky, snowplows blowing by.

Parked in the very front row. There was hardly anyone there. Bad road conditions kept a lot of people home. Boy, were they missing out. Perfect powder condtions. Never a lift line all day long.

Skied 3 sets of six runs with a break in between to thaw out which included a fluid exchange, power snack and safety meeting. This routine lasted until about 7pm. Every run was a fluffy, floaty powder run. Even skied in the woods, though there was not much of a base, with about a foot or so of fluff on top, I sank through to buried limbs and roots, but it was worth it for the nice untouched powder in there.

It was snowing hard enough that we had refills all day into the evening, so every run included fresh tracks nearly every turn. Sweet!

It was a balmy six degrees at 3pm with a 10-15mph breeze which died down at sunset. At 4pm the flat light was cut when they turned on the night lights. We thought it would get colder at dark but it seemed to warm up. At 7pm, Tom announced he was done and wanted to get home, as he left his wife home with the baby and he wanted to get home before the kid went to bed. While he debooted, dusted off the car and warmed it up, I took one more run and regretably departed with 3 more hours of skiing before the mountain closed. I was grateful for the companionship and drove him safely home to his family. The roads were plowed yet snowy, but allowed for 40mph on the highway. We got home just in time, and I got to say g'night to the little fella and his momma. When I got home I barely made it up our unplowed driveway (1000' hill) with about a foot of snow on it.

Currently it has warmed up to 10 degrees with no wind and the snow is still falling. I think we got around 10" of snow already. Brushed 6" of snow off the hot tub, which contained a steamy 108 degree bubbling delight. Our woodstove has transformed our living room into a sauna at 88 degrees. Warm and cozy apres ski at home. A perfect day.

We will likely check out the backcountry tmrw, as 25mph winds will make lift riding a bit more challenging than it was today. I also expect all those people who didn't make it today to be at the ski areas tmrw. Might be a good day to earn some turns on a nearby 700 vertical foot power line.
