Wanaka, New Zealand - Treble Cone ski area announced today that the ski area will open the Home Basin Friday after good natural snowfall overnight.
Wilmington, NY - Whiteface Mountain staffers are getting little rest over the summer months as they prepare for a new ski lift and trails in the Upstate New York ski area's new Lookout Mountain development.
Killington, VT - Killington Resort President and General Manager Chris Nyberg this week announced the promotion of Patricia Ryan to Director of Sales and Marketing at the central Vermont ski and snowboard resort. Ryan replaces Dave Rathbun, who was hired last month to be President and General Manager of parent company Powdr Corp.'s Mt. Bachelor ski area, located near Bend, Ore.
Rangeley, ME - Saddleback Ski Resort, located in the Rangeley Lakes Region of northwestern Maine, has been awarded the Gannett Family Business of the Year Award in the Small Business category by the Institute for Family-Owned Business. Bill and Irene Berry of Farmington, Maine accepted the award on their family’s behalf.
Ludlow, VT - New ski trails, laser-guided superpipe cutting, first-in-the-East lift loading and grooming technologies, plus energy efficiencies in snowmaking and other operations are on tap for next winter at southern Vermont's Okemo ski and snowboard resort.
Los Angeles, CA - Alpine World Cup overall skiing champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) and reigning X Games gold medalist snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler (Aspen, CO) and Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) have all been nominated for a 2008 ESPY Award. In its 16th year, ESPN's ESPY Awards will commemorate the most exciting moments, greatest achievements and top performances in athletics around the globe. In only it's fifth year of doing so, the ESPY Awards will be determined solely by the fans who can either vote online at www.espys.tv, or through text message at espn.mobi. Voting began July 1 and runs through July 12.
Lyme, NH - Longtime Associated Press sports writer Mike Clark, whose editorial support and historical record keeping on the International Ski Federataion (FIS) Alpine World Cup made a significant impact on skiing worldwide, was honored with the presentation of a FIS Journalist Award June 28. The International Ski Federation presents the award to journalists worldwide for their service to the sport.
Palmerston, New Zealand - Professional skiers can now learn how to ski faster with the aid of a new system designed by New Zealand researchers to capture three-dimensional motion of athletic movements – Fusion Motion Capture (FMC). Featured in Wiley-Blackwell’s journal, Sports Technology, this is the first time the study of FMC has been published in a journal.
Mt. Buller (VIC), Australia - Volcom Stone's first annual Australian Peanut Butter and Rail Jam snowboard event will take place at Victoria's Mt. Buller ski area on Saturday, July 19. The Peanut Butter and Rail Jam is Volcom’s amateur snowboard contest series and is part of the Let The Kids Ride Free program, a grass roots effort for kids of all ages to express their talent, gain contest experience, have a good time, get some free grinds and walk away with free product for a day of snowboarding.
Middleton, WI - In an effort to help define their sport for the future, the women's U.S. Ski Jumping Team, in conjunction with Wisconsin's Black Hawk Ski Club, recently spent five days coaching a group of 31 up-and-coming female ski jumping athletes.
Government Camp, OR - U.S. Snowboarding's snowboardcross athletes recently wrapped up their first camp of the summer in Oregon on the snowfields of Mt. Hood. Athletes had a chance to work on Olympic-quality terrain and even managed to take in a mountain biking park session.
Kamas, UT - From Tour de France to the streets of Kamas, Utah, bike racing season is in full swing. After taking second place in the High Uintas Classic, the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team's Bill Demong (Vermontville, NY) showed that winter isn't the only season where he can land on the podium.
Jay, VT - After nearly 25 years of leading Jay Peak as President and Chief Operating Officer, Bill Stenger, along with a group of private investors, has purchased the northern Vermont ski and snowboard resort.
Park City, UT - After four years with the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team, former NorAm dual moguls champion McKenzy Golding (Squaw Valley, CA) is retiring from the sport, according to Freestyle Program Director Polly-Jo Clark.
