Kananaskis Valley (AB), Canada – Erik Guay, of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, continued his run of spectacular super G performances to end the 2009-10 season, winning Tuesday’s GMC Canadian Championships men’s super G at Nakiska Ski Area west of Calgary. On the women’s side, it was Marie-Michèle Gagnon, of Lac-Etchemin, Quebec, successfully defending her super combined title in a time of 1:41.74.nGuay, the 2010 super G Crystal Globe winner after finishing the season with consecutive World Cup wins in the discipline, grabbed the top spot on Tuesday in a time of 1:06.72. Guay was pleased to win, admitting that his first super G race since becoming the overall World Cup champion did come with a little added pressure.
“There is actually a little more pressure today. When you are expected to win, when you just came away with the Globe,” said the 28-year-old Guay. “There is a little bit more pressure, more than I thought actually. But it’s a good position to be in. I think that’s what we are here for and it worked out. There are some great skiers here like Manny (Osborne-Paradis), Jan (Hudec) and others so it’s great,” added Guay, a national super G champion in 2002 and 2003.
In all, Guay now has eight GMC Canadian championship titles in four disciplines.
National development team skier Erik Read (Calgary, Alberta) was the top junior, placing 13th overall in 1:09.54.
Gagnon earned the second GMC Canadian championship of her career, finishing with the top time in the opening super G run and then holding on to her lead during the slalom.
“I was really happy I won the super G. For me that’s a pretty big step, I mean to be beating girls like Britt (Janyk) and Emily (Brydon) that’s really good,” Gagnon said. “I am planning on winning a couple more (GMC Canadian Championship) titles this week,” she added with a grin.
The top ladies’ junior was Laura Rozinowicz (Toronto, Ontario), who finished fifth overall in 1:44.70.
