Squaw Valley, CA – The 2010 Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival comes to the Village at Squaw Valley USA from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday. This all-ages, community sponsored event gives participants an opportunity to learn about recycling, composting, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed, forest health, and reducing ecological footprints via a diverse array of agency representatives and earth-friendly vendors at the base of the California ski and snowboard resort.nIn 2009, over 6,000 people attended the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival and it is the largest eco-event in the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee area.
Earth Day is a zero waste event. Typical trash receptacles will not be available in effort to minimize waste. All food vendors will be using biodegradable take-out containers made of either paper or PLA, a high tech starch-based plastic. Food and biodegradable waste will be collected and composted by Full Circle Compost in Minden, Nevada. Booth participants are requested to minimize handouts and implement other forms of waste reduction.
Earth Day will also host an array of events including a pot luck dinner this evening and film festival Friday night in the days leading up to Saturday’s main event.
Featured at this year’s event on Saturday, Dr. Solar’s self-contained solar powered portable traveling family entertainment experience is a eco-friendly gypsy wagon affair that features an eco-themed interactive show. In addition, Rolling reCREATE will be bringing a vehicle full of fun and fascinating material for a hands-on craft experience that encourages everyone to rethink their notion of trash. Rolling reCREATE will provide the trash, tools and instruction for kids to build a masterpiece out of repurposed goods. Kids of all ages are encouraged to attend. Activities begin at 11 a.m. and will be held at the base area of Squaw Valley USA.
This year’s event features three live bands during the day. The lineup includes local favorites Drop Theory, the Mark Sexton Band and headliner, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. The music schedule is available online at www.tahoetruckeeearthday.org.
Returning to the festivities this year is the Truckee High School Envirolution Trashion Show, a recycling fashion show of artsy outfits that students create out of materials that are not easily biodegraded. Each outfit will be presented with a commentary piece that is funny and educational, sending the message that everyone can consciously work at reducing, reusing, and recycling.
T.A.R.T. will be offering free transportation to and from the event from North Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Truckee.
Tonight’s Pot-Luck Dinner will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bistro 22, in the Village at Squaw Valley. Friday night’s Earth Day Film Festival, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Resort at Squaw Creek, will feature a series of relevant, thought-provoking and often humorous films. Tickets cost $10 in advance and at the door, and are on sale now at New Moon in Truckee and Tahoe City.
