Park City, UT – The U.S. Freestyle Ski Team’s aerials squad has been hitting the water ramps at the Utah Olympic Park. The summer camp included 2010 Olympian Scotty Bahrke of Tahoe City, Calif., and Hamburg, N.Y.’s Matt DePeters.n”We have two athletes here this week, normally we have three training this time of year,” said U.S. Aerials Coach Brian Currutt. “Right now we have a small but strong crew.”
This session at the splash pool is focused on getting back to the basics. With such a small group, there is a one-to-one coach to athlete ratio, providing the ideal coaching situation for Bahrke and DePeters.
“Right now we’re just working on more simple double maneuvers,” explained Currutt. “We’re taking a step back, getting back to the basics and refining technique so when we get to the bigger jumps next month we’ll have a more solid platform.
“This is the type of attention you really can’t get in other years. We’re fortunate to have a small team right now,” said Currutt. “These guys are getting everything that they need, very specialized and focused attention with lots of video analysis.”
With both Bahrke and DePeters getting one-on-one time with U.S. Aerial Coaches Ryan Snow and Currutt, they are able to work on individually with either Snow or Currutt on different things.
“My focus is a back double-full full, which is a triple twisting double flip,” said DePeters.”It’s a new trick. I’ve only done about 15 of them, so it’s just starting out and learning the trick.”
“I’m working on a lot of take offs, tightening my knee and twist timing,” said Bahrke. “The big goal is to do the trick as many times as possible and correct it, so it’s built in your head and doing it wrong feels weird.”
The next block of training is scheduled to begin July 19 at the Utah Olympic Park and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s (USSA) home base, the Center of Excellence in Park City.
“We’re out here having a good time and the athletes are moving forward,” said Currutt.
