Venice Beach, CA – A southern California beach may seem an unlikely place to catch top snowboarding action, but 80,000 pounds of snow will transform the famed beachfront into a snowboarding spectacle at Sunday’s 4th Annual Supergirl Jam.nSome of snowboarding’s best female pros will display their most innovative tricks in tomorrow’s Supergirl Snowboard Rail Jam. Laurie Currier, of Wrightwood, Calif., has dominated the competition two years running, handily winning the overall top prize and the best trick contests in 2008 and 2009. This year, however, she’ll face the largest field of competitors to date as she seeks a third consecutive gold medal.
Embodying the power of DC Comics’ iconic hero, Supergirl, this event, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. on the beach, marks the third stop in the 2010 Supergirl Jam series, the action sports industry’s largest all-female competition and lifestyle festival. The Supergirl Jam is designed to celebrate female strength, independence and empowerment and features more than 100 female pros in surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and inline skating. The first event in the series, the Supergirl Am Jam, took place on June 30, at Simi Valley, California’s Skatelab and honored the best amateur female skateboard street athletes. Last weekend, Oceanside, California hosted the Supergirl Pro Junior, an ASP Grade-4 event, which celebrated the best 20-and-under female surfers.
This year’s Supergirl Jam Skateboard Street contest welcomes the return of the 2008 Supergirl Jam Skateboard Champion, Huntington Beach’s Lauren Perkins, against a talented field which includes defending champion Amy Caron (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and 2010 X Games medalists Leticia Bufoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Alexis Slabone (New York, N.Y.). The ladies will showcase their skateboard skills on a custom-built course consisting of mobile skateboard street elements set up next to the beach.
Amongst those riding the rails in the Supergirl Inline Best Trick contest will be 2008 Supergirl Jam Inline champion Chynna Weierstall (Roseville, Mich.), #1 ranked Fallon Heffernan (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.), and the legendary Fabiola da Silva, whose seven X Games gold medals make her a serious contender at every contest.
This year, the Supergirl Jam also welcomes “actionistas” from the worlds of gymnastics and freestyle motocross, as Olympic Gold medalist and World Champion gymnast Nastia Liukin and Nitro Circus’ Jolene Van Vugt make appearances to show their support of female empowerment. They’ll sign autographs, take pictures with fans and cheer on the competitors.
Also coming out to show their support will be Aly Michalka and Robbie Jones, two of the stars of the new Warner Bros. Television series Hellcats. A one-hour drama set in the world of competitive college cheerleading, Hellcats premieres Sept. 8 and airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m./8 p.m. Central on The CW.
An official after party will be held beginning at 5 p.m. at High Rooftop Lounge in Venice Beach.
