Nelson Lakes, New Zealand – A season of snow storms from the southeast and warm, rainy conditions flowing in from the north have forced officials at New Zealand’s Rainbow Ski Area to suspend operations after the end of the day on Sunday.nThe conditions have resulted in a lower than normal snow base, and consequently lower than normal visitor numbers.
Operators say that they have reached this decision to ensure the on-going viability of the ski area. Although the beginner’s and intermediate areas as well as the T-Bar have good conditions, there does not seem to be enough snow to attract a large enough customer base to the club ski field.
Snowmaking opportunities have been limited this season. With the warmer weather that arrived in mid-August, snowmaking became unreliable. Until they get a more substantial snow base that opens more terrain, from a good snowfall, they have made the call to suspend operations. They plan to leave the field in a position to re-open with short notice when the snow finally arrives.
