Killington, VT – As Vermont’s Killington Ski Club turns 50 this season, the board of directors has voted to change the organization’s name to the Killington Winter Sports Club (KWSC) to encompass all of the programming and activities that the club offers today, which is significantly more than what the Club was created for in 1961.n”The goal for the Club is to make all programs accessible to all people, especially all children and youth athletes,” said Club President Gordon Brewster. “When kids are asked, ‘What are you doing this weekend?’ we want them to say, ‘We’ll be at the Club.’ The Club has always had numerous identities like the Alpine Training Center or the Ski Club. We believe the new name is the best way to consolidate these identities into a single name that best reflects all that we offer to our members and the Killington community.”
In 1960, Killington Founder Pres Smith and Albert “Monk” Martin had the idea to create a ski club in order to promote recreational and competitive skiing at Killington. Over the years the Club has grown, both in membership and in programming opportunities. Now in addition to alpine training and racing, the Club supports freestyle skiing, alpine and freestyle snowboarding, telemarking, and other on-snow recreation. In addition, a social component continues to support the Club as well.
Today, the Club has more than 1,200 members, which includes 300 family memberships. Members hail from throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, and points further south along the East Coast. The Club’s home is located at the base of the K-1 Gondola at Killington and has enough space to include coaches’ offices, competition and event offices, member ski lockers, ski boot storage cubbies, lunch tables, a kitchenette for prepping lunches, a heated deck with outdoor dining tables, a video review room for the competition program, space for social events including holiday parties, barbecues and awards banquets, plus ski tuning benches, and restroom facilities.
KWSC offers multi-snow sport programs including a two-day program that starts the first weekend of December and ends the last weekend in March. There also is a three-day program that starts the first full weekend in November and ends the last weekend in March. In addition, the Club partners with Killington Mountain School to provide opportunities for athletes to further develop and hone the skills of those young athletes with serious competitive aspirations.
