Rossland (BC), Canada – Red Mountain in Rossland, home to some of the wildest ski and snowboard terrain in the West, has been known to push the limits, all while producing a world champion or two. For the 2010-11 season, this tradition continues with the unveiling of two new backcountry skiing areas, boasting even more challenging terrain.nLocated a short 20-minute skin or snowshoe traverse away from Granite Mountain, Red’s tallest peak, Grey Mountain’s newly cut glades will tempt powder-seekers willing to put in a little effort for fresh tracks. The new area encompasses over 120 hectares, or 300 acres, within Red’s controlled recreational area.
Further afield on adjacent Kirkup Mountain, the new Alpine Glory Hut will offer a more intimate backcounty powder experience with day and overnight guided tours. For the rest of us content to feast on the lift-serviced but still spacious 682 inbound hectares (1,685 acres) of terrain, Red’s newly renovated historic day lodge awaits with lively après ski in the refurbished Rafters Bar.
And those championship athletes? See them en masse, as Red thrills competitors and spectators alike when it hosts the Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships Jan. 13-22, the BC Alpine FIS Race Feb. 26-27, the BCSA FIS Snowboardcross Mar. 4-5, and the FIS NorAm Skicross Finals Mar. 11-12.
