Windy Weather Wipes Out Birds of Prey Downhill

Avon, CO – The Audi Birds of Prey downhill at Colorado’s Beaver Creek ski area was canceled Friday due to high winds. The original 11 a.m. MT start had been delayed twice before the jury made the decision at 1:30 p.m. MT to call the World Cup men’s ski race. Super G is scheduled for today as planned with a giant slalom on Sunday.n”It’s howling pretty hard up there. Unfortunately Mother Nature took control,” said U.S. Ski Team Head Coach Sasha Rearick. “It’s a big disappointment because the effort that went into putting this race on was absolutely perfect – the work the race crew did and the events department did to put this on was amazing. It almost makes me want to cry because you don’t get to run it. The track was awesome.”

The U.S. Ski Team will start an impressive group of nine athletes in today’s’s super G led by Olympic medalists Bode Miller (Franconia, N.H.), Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.). Also in the gate are Steven Nyman (Heber, Utah), Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, Calif.), Erik Fisher (Middleton, Idaho), Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, Calif.), Tommy Ford (Bend, Ore.) and NorAm super G champion Chris Frank (Windham, N.Y.).
