1 Skier Dead, 1 Hurt in Avalanche Near Loveland Ski Area

Georgetown, CO – An avalanche in Dry Gulch near Loveland Ski Area in Colorado killed one backcountry skier and injured another on Sunday.nThe avalanche was triggered by the two skiers around 1 p.m. on Sunday in the drainage just north of the ski area along the Continental Divide near Georgetown.

32-year-old Kyle Shellberg, a former Loveland ski patroller, was killed in the 500 foot wide slide that ran for 600 vertical feet. His skiing partner, 31-year-old Justin Latici, was hurt with a leg injury but survived. He was flown to Denver for treatment.

Latici dug himself out and located Shellberg under 10 feet of debris after 15 to 20 minutes of searching, administering CPR until rescuers arrived. Both were equipped with beacons, shovels and probes. Avalanche conditions were rated as “moderate” by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center at the time of the incident.
