Michigan Ski Area Base Lodge Destroyed by Fire

Bessemer, MI – A fire Thursday morning has destroyed the Main Lodge at Big Powderhorn ski area in Bessemer, located east of Ironwood on the Upper Peninsula.n

No cause has yet been determined, although one employee told a television news crew at the scene that the fire started in the kitchen. The building was completely engulfed in flames that continued into Thursday afternoon. No injuries have been reported, but the structure is believed to be a total loss.

Big Powderhorn will be open for skiing and snowboarding Friday morning, with all operations moved to the resort’s Caribou Lodge. Those with lodging reservations need to contact the Powderhorn Lodging Association at (800) 501-7669 to confirm that their reservation is still valid.
