Top Athletes to Compete at Squaw Valley to Honor the Memory of Shane McConkey

Olympic Valley, CA – March 26, 2011 will mark the return of The Pain McShlonkey Classic at Squaw Valley USA. This event, which takes place both on and off the mountain, serves as a fun tribute to legendary skier Shane McConkey as pros and amateurs battle for the highly coveted Golden Saucer trophy and bragging rights.nCelebrated for his playful spirit, McConkey was the mastermind behind the original Pain McShlonkey Open that debuted in 2003. What began as a behind-the-scenes late-night race between competitors at the 1998 Winter X Games has evolved into a beloved event, attracting athletes from around the world.

Although the event was dubbed after one of Shane’s funny alter egos, there’s no questioning McConkey’s true character.

“One thing about Shane is that what you saw is what he was: a man full of stoke, passion, ingenuity, humor and a zest for making your moments on this earth count,” said longtime friend Scott Gaffney. “As far as he was concerned, if you weren’t laughing, playing, scaring yourself, competing against friends, making fun of each other or making fun of yourself, you were essentially wasting time. The Pain McShlonkey Classic is a perfect amalgam of all of these elements that were so important to a guy who inspired us to no end.”
