Yongpyong, South Korea – LG Snowboard FIS World Cup officials canceled a snowboardcross event scheduled for this in Korea after athletes and coaches voiced safety concerns. A date for the possible rescheduling of the race has not yet been determined.nConcerns that the course was too steep and too turny were voiced at an emergency meeting Sunday night. A parallel slalom is still on the program in Yongpyong on Wednesday.
The U.S. had three riders — Alex Deibold (Manchester Center, Vt.), Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, Mass.) and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (Girdwood, Alaska) — on the snowboardcross start list in Korea. They will now return stateside for the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Also heading to Utah for the event are two-time Olympic champion Seth Wescott (Carrabassett Valley, ME), Olympic silver medalist Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) and X Games champions Nate Holland (Olympic Valley, Calif.) and Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, Mich.), as well as several international teams.
Canada’s Dominique Maltais of Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, Quebec, is currently leading the World Cup standings in women’s snowboard cross, followed in second place by Olympic gold medalist Maëlle Ricker of Squamish, British Columbia. The next snowboard cross race of the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Tour will be held in Stoneham, Quebec, Canada on Feb. 17.
