Out of Bounds Skiers at Killington Keep Rescuers Busy

Killington, VT – A rash of lost skiers leaving the boundaries of Killington Ski Resort in Vermont forced rescuers to locate a total of nine people over a four-day period last week.nThree separate groups of skiers and snowboarders needed rescue on Thursday and Friday after riding out of bounds. One person, 22-year-old Philip Embury, of Boyce, Va., spent a cold overnight Thursday in the Vermont woods before emerging in the area of Wheelerville Road in Mendon Friday morning. His partner, who had a cell phone, became separated from Embury and was guided to safety by members of Killington Ski Patrol. Two other groups, one from New York and one from New Jersey, became lost in the same area on Friday and were guided to Wheelerville Road by cell phone.

On Saturday, 36-year-old Susan Yee of New York City called rescuers via cell phone after becoming lost off Pico Mountain. Searchers used Yee’s GPS coordinates to guide her to safety. Then on Sunday, Steve Buchanan of Plymouth, Mass., used his cell phone to report himself lost after skiing out of bounds at Killington. Rescuers located Buchanan via cell phone triangulation and brought him to safety around 7:30 p.m.

Vermont State Police say that they’ve had to search for at least 16 missing skiers statewide in the past month.
