Penn. Skier Dies at New York’s Windham Mountain

Windham, NY – A 69-year-old novice skier died Friday at Windham Mountain ski area in New York State’s Catskill Mountains after falling and sliding off a ski trail into a tree.nJoan Sabatini, of Yardley, Penn., was skiing at Windham with friends at the time of the 11:30 a.m. incident. Sabatini sustained head injuries but was conscious and responsive when Windham’s ski patrol arrived at the scene. She was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y., where she was pronounced dead later Friday.

Even through Sabatini was said to be a novice skier, the incident occurred on Wedgie, one of Windham’s intermediate runs off the East Peak high-speed quad chairlift. She was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time.

Sabatini’s death was the second at Windham Mountain this winter.
