Snowboarders Fined for Triggering Sunshine Village Avalanche

Banff (AB), Canada – A pair of snowboarders were fined C$297 each for trespassing into a closed sector of Sunshine Village ski area in Banff, where they triggered an avalanche.nKyle William Veith, 25, of Banff, and Colin Mathew Mansell, 25, of London, Ontario, crossed a closure rope into Sunshine’s Wild West area on Monday and started the slide. Neither was buried. Wild West has been closed all season due to high avalanche risk.

The trespassing fines were imposed by the RCMP. The ski area is considering further action against the duo, as one was using someone else’s season pass.

Sunshine Village spokesperson Doug Firby discounted comparisons with a December incident at the ski area in which the resort owner’s son was found among a group skiing a closed area, indicating that the December closure was not because of avalanche danger. While the skiers in the December incident faced no known disciplinary action, a number of senior ski patrollers and staffers were dismissed by the ski area following the incident, and four have initiated a wrongful termination lawsuit against the ski area alleging that the dismissals resulted from reprimanding the skiers in the December altercation.
