Finnish Snowboarder Dies in Bansko Avalanche

Bansko, Bulgaria – A Finnish snowboarder was killed Thursday and another injured in an avalanche in the ski resort town of Bansko, officials indicate.nThe slide Thursday occurred on the slopes below the Todorka Peak. Two others in the group were uninjured. A member of the party called for help using a cell phone.

The victim’s name has not been released.

Bansko received a total of 29 centimeters of snow over the week leading up to Thursday’s slide, and another five centimeters of fresh snow came down on Wednesday. Avalanche danger was rated as a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5 when the incident occurred.

Bansko, Bulgaria’s most popular ski resort, is located about 100 miles south of the country’s capital, Sofia.
