Calgary (AB), Canada – In only her first slopestyle snowboarding and third career World Cup, Truckee, Calif.’s Allyson Carroll clinched victory Saturday in Calgary. Austria’s Clemen’s Schattschneider won the men’s contest.nCarroll headed into the Saturday afternoon finals having qualified in fourth. The 22-year-old threw down big launching a frontside boardslide to boardslide, 50-50 backside 180 out, switch boardslide as well as backside grab, backside 360 and backside 540 in the kicker section to take the “W.”
“I didn’t expect this to happen. Not a tiny little bit,” said Carroll. “I dislocated my left shoulder twice in January so I was hoping to be strong enough for this event after not ridding for three weeks.”
Carroll was joined by Canada’s Brooke Voigt, of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and Pia Mesuburger of Austria on the podium in second and third. Serena Shaw, of Bondville, Vt., finished next for the U.S. in fifth.
“I couldn’t be happier and I’m not stepping down by any means,” commented Voigt, who repeated her second-place finish in Calgary from last year. “Being at the same level or higher is what I’m going for and I’m really happy with that. I had some solid runs.”
Schattschneider topped the men’s field landing a cab 270 to frontside boardslide on the downrail, cab 360 bonk on the Oakley-O, blunt frontside 270 out, 270 on 270 off the canon pole into a backside 900 to switch backside 900 and frontside 720 melon in the kicker section. Finishing behind Schattschneider was Canada’s Robby Balharry, of Canmore, Alberta, and Zachary Stone of Collingwood, Ontario, in second and third, respectively.
“Going into my last run I knew I was already in third and Zach was behind me, who is one of my best friends. So I just went for it and it happened,” remarked Balharry. “After the rails I did a frontside 7, backside 9 and a cab 10. It’s also so much better because my friends and family get to come out, so it’s a lot of fun.”
“I’m stoked to see my buddy up there,” commented Stone on Balharry’s silver medal. “He deserved it, his run was sick.”
“I certainly was under pressure but then said to myself, that I should just do it as it always had worked out in the training, too,” said winner Schattschneider. “That fortunately worked out. So, I’m pretty happy.”
U.S. Snowboarding rookie Matt Ladley, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., fronted the U.S. men in eighth.
The competition is tight as Schattschneider took over the big air/slopestyle world cup standings lead from Canadian rider Sebastien Toutant of L’Assomption, Quebec, Canada, who did not compete in the contest in Calgary. With his third spot finish worth 600 points, Stone jumped more than ten spots in the standings to fifth and Balharry gained 800 points to move eighteen spots, up to seventh overall.
