Backcountry Skier Perishes in Washington Avalanche

Wenatchee, WA – The Chelan County Sheriff has reported that a backcountry skier died Saturday in an avalanche on Mt. Cashmere’s southwest face, near Wenatchee.nDaniel Zimmermann, 28, of Leavenworth, Wash., was carried for 800 feet through a couloir into a small stand of trees above Trout Creek. While some of Zimmerman’s touring companions left to summon help, others remained at the scene and located Zimmerman, who died before rescuers arrived.

The party of four or five skiers had dug a snow pit to assess stability prior to dropping into the couloir. Zimmerman was the third skier to descend when the slide broke loose. Zimmerman, a partner in his father’s construction company in Leavenworth, lived in a yurt on the slopes of Mt. Cashmere.
