Myrkdalen-Voss, Norway – Winter X Games champion John Teller, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., was fourth Saturday in the final World Cup skicross race of the season in Myrkdalen-Voss. Chris Del Bosco, of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, topped the men’s podium with Anna Holmlund of Sweden the women’s winner.nTeller qualified for Saturday’s finals in fourth giving him a good bracket position for better start lanes through the heats. He blitzed through the first round and quarterfinals winning both. In the semifinal he was second to move on to the finals.
“I was trying to setup a pass on Del Bosco to go into first. I leaned in and caught a rut and my ski just came off,” explained Teller.
“It was a good way to finish. I’m pretty excited,” said Del Bosco, who has had eight straight top-four finishes after starting the year on the comeback trail following knee surgery. “I had a decent start in the final and skied my own race. There was some contact behind me, I think.”
It’s the third straight year Del Bosco has finished second in the race for the overall ski cross title, this year behind Austria’s Andreas Matt. He also won gold at the world championships and silver at X Games this season.
“I wasn’t even thinking like that at the beginning of the year,” said Del Bosco of the race for the overall title. “Things came together right before worlds and I managed to finish strong.”
Patrick Duran, of Fayston, Vt., made his third finals appearance in Saturday’s season finale finishing 30th.
With Saturday’s results, Teller ended fourth in the FIS World Cup skicross standings. Andreas Matt of Austria topped the rankings with Del Bosco second, and Finland’s Jouni Pellinen third.
“My goal was to stay fourth in the overall,” said Teller. “I did that and I’m really happy – with no support and no coach, I was doing my own skis the whole year. To pull off a fourth place meant a lot.”
The women’s skicross the World Cup went to Holmlund with Heidi Zacher of Germany second and Kelsey Serwa of Canada third.
Serwa entered Saturday’s race with an outside chance of claiming the overall title, but her second-place result meant she finished with 610 points, just behind Holmlund with 672 and Germany’s Heidi Zacher (612), who was fifth on Saturday.
“In the first two heats, I got out in front. The course is really technical,” said Serwa. “I was a little bit ahead of Anna but she was on the inside and got a little bit ahead. I kept waiting for a spot to pass. I was hoping for something but she was a little too far away. I’m pretty happy. I don’t have anything to complain about.”
Canada’s first and second place results helped cement the country’s place atop the skicross Nation’s Cup.
“Being able to come out as the best team, it says a lot about the program,” said head Canadian coach Eric Archer, whose team skipped a World Cup race in January in order to attend the Winter X Games. “That’s huge with all the injuries we’ve had and with missing an event. I’m proud of everyone.”
