Stateline, NV – A skier who hiked out of bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort at the south end of Lake Tahoe and subsequently became stuck in a tree well was located Sunday, a busy day for Douglas County search and rescue officials who cited another skier for venturing out of bounds and located five more.
An unidentified 19-year-old Dallas, Texas man called 911 after he became stuck in a tree well around 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. He had hiked with several companions to ski the terrain beneath the resort’s gondola when they became separated before he became entangled with the tree, officials indicate. He managed to extricate himself after nearly an hour, but nonetheless waited for rescuers to guide him to safety.
Earlier in the day, Douglas County officials received a report of a missing skier around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, and he was located at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Although the man indicated that he did not realize that he was out of bounds as he was unfamiliar with Heavenly’s layout, officials nonetheless cited him for skiing out of bounds. His injuries were unknown.
Around 1 p.m. on Sunday, officials were dispatched to locate a lost 16-year-old snowboarder in the Palisades area, off Lower Kingsbury Grade in Stateline. He had dialed 911 from his cell phone to indicate that he didn’t know how to get out of the area. Eighteen volunteers formed search and rescue teams on snowshoe, snowmobile and snowcat to look for the teen, and he was located after about an hour along with four other lost skiers and snowboarders. All were transported to safety.
