Aspen, CO – After reopening for the past two weekends for skiing and snowboarding on the upper mountain at Ajax, this week’s warm weather today prompted Aspen Skiing Co. officials to call off any further skiing and riding on Aspen Mountain this month.
According to company officials the warm weather has caused the remaining upper mountain snowpack to soften to the point that skiing is only marginally acceptable. Aspen area residents not yet ready to throw in the towel will now turn their attention to nearby Independence Pass, where deep snow still remains for late season turns.
After closing on April 20, Aspen Mountain opened for skiing and riding for the past two weekends on 136 acres of upper mountain terrain from the Ajax Express chairlift, with uploading and downloading via the Silver Queen Gondola.
