Cable, WI – Telemark Resort in Cable, home to the Birkebeiner cross country ski race, has been sold to new owners who are reopening the property that’s been closed since May 2010.

The association representing owners of Telemark Lodge closed the building in 2010 after efforts to sell the lodge and property collapsed. Last September, they voted to surrender the property to creditors in a “friendly foreclosure”. The resort had failed to earn a profit for 11 years. Telemark Partners LLC has now purchased the lodge and property out of foreclosure.

“Telemark’s foundation is sound, and its brand is unique and world famous,” the new owners stated in a press release issued on Monday. “The partners would like to welcome everyone to come and explore all the amenities the wonderful resort has to offer.”

Telemark, named after the Telemark region of Norway, was founded in 1946 as one of America’s first alpine ski areas by Tony Wise, who also started the American Birkebeiner, nicknamed the “Birkie” and modeled after the Norwegian race of the same name. The lodge, built in 1972, sits amongst Telemark’s more than 1,100 acres of rolling, tree-covered hills.

The new owners have indicated that the Birkebeiner race will continue at Telemark in 2012. In addition to the Birkie, Telemark traditionally hosts numerous annual regional, national, and international cross country skiing, running and cycling events, including the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival.
