The woman, 55, was reported missing by her husband at around 5:40 p.m. local time Saturday afternoon. Queenstown Police called in a helicopter to search for the woman, but her husband’s call came with only 20 minutes of daylight remaining in the day.

After finding herself around 3 p.m. at the bottom of the Rocky Gully T-bar that she didn’t wish to ride, the woman struck out in an easterly direction thinking that there was a road that would lead her to the base of the ski area. She soon thereafter became disoriented. Leaving her skis behind, she continued downward for more than three kilometers in the dark, including descending rocky bluffs, climbing several wildlife fences and being chased by cattle when she entered their corral, before reaching the home of local residents on the Coronet Peak Station Road around 8:30 p.m.
