Ohakune, New Zealand – International snow sports stars, including Kiwi Sam Smoothy, Megan Klassen of Canada and Bastien Piguet of France, will descend on New Zealand’s Mt. Ruapehu early next week for the Export 33 Xtreme, a four star Freeride World Tour skiing and snowboarding qualifier at Whakapapa ski area.
The Export 33 Xtreme showcases thrilling big mountain skiing and snowboarding across Whakapapa’s Pinnacles, boasting steep terrain and exposed cliffs. Mt Ruapehu spokesperson Lacey Dandy says that the competition provides budding and professional Kiwi skiers with the chance to test their skills against international talent and make their mark on a global scale.
“This year we are delighted to have had a record number of international entries from major ski centers across the world coming to Whakapapa,” says Dandy. “It’s a testament to the world class ski and boarding conditions we have available at Mt. Ruapehu.”
Mt. Ruapehu’s conditions and terrain, however, are not the only drawing card. A massive prize pool of almost US$60,000 in cash and product prizes will be doled out to winners of the events which will run on the first three good weather days from the 5th to 11th of September.
“This is the most money on offer for extreme skiing and boarding in New Zealand,” adds Dandy. “The first place prize in the Open Men’s skiing division is $10,000, which will certainly attract the best skiers to the Export 33 Xtreme event.”
Dandy encourages snowboarders, skiers and spectators alike to join the action. The ski area’s Knoll Ridge Café provides a breathtaking vantage point with a multi-story glass wall looking straight onto the competition stage. Sightseeing lift passes are also available.
