Burlington, VT – Burton Snowboarders founder Jake Burton Carpenter announced to staff via a company memo on Friday that he’s been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
“The bad news is that I have cancer,” Burton began. “The good news is that it is as curable as it gets.”
In his announcement Burton, 57, said that his planned treatment will include three months of chemotherapy and possible surgery. According to the Office of Rare Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the survival rate for early-stage seminoma, or testicular cancer, is over 95 percent. Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, confirms that testicular cancer is highly treatable and curable.
Burton has already begun his chemotherapy regimen and has cautioned that his work schedule may fluctuate as treatment continues.
“I have no idea what my work schedule is going to be, but I assume it will have its ups and downs,” Burton concluded. “In the meantime, the best thing you can do for me is to keep kicking ass the way you have been.”
