Denver, CO – Colorado ski slopes marked their first two deaths of the new season on Friday.

The Eagle County Sheriff reports that Dr. Charles Tuft, 62, died on Vail’s opening day. The victim, a longtime local doctor, reportedly lost control on Gitalong Road, designated as a beginner slope, and went down an embankment. Tuft’s cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Also on Friday an experienced 20-year-old snowboarder died after hitting a tree at Breckenridge. The University of Colorado-Boulder student, identified by the Summit County Coroner’s office as Evan Massini of Westbrook, Conn., reportedly died of massive internal injuries in the incident alongside the intermediate Northstar run.

Both victims were reportedly wearing helmets.
