Schild Continues to Dominate Slalom as Lindsey Vonn Skis Off Course

Courchevel, France –Austrian Marlies Schild continued her slalom dominance on Sunday by winning an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup in snowy Courchevel, the second of the women’s World Cup season, by a staggering 1.87 seconds over Finn Tanja Poutianen.

Over three feet of new snow this week forced the cancellation of the giant slalom and produced soft race conditions for the slalom that was postponed to today and favored those with early bib numbers. Olympic downhill champion Lindsey Vonn, of Vail, Colo., went out in the first run, yet retained a 236 point lead in the early World Cup overall standings as defending overall winner Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany failed to finish the second run. Squaw Valley, Calif.’s Julia Mancuso did not start due to a stomach bug and will miss the next race on a planned break. American teammates Sarah Schleper, of Vail, and Jackson Hole, Wyo.’s Resi Steigler did not qualify for a second run. Mikaela Shiffrin, also of Vail, went out in the first run.

The women’s World Cup tour now moves to Flachau, Austria for a night slalom on Tuesday.
