Lack of Snow Forces World Cup Officials to Scrub Snowboard Cross in Austria

Bad Gastein, Austria – A World Cup snowboard cross competition set for Jan. 15 on the slopes of Bad Gastein in the Austrian state of Salzburg has been called off due to a lack of snow.

Austrian Ski Federation officials say that the half meter of snow currently on the slopes is enough to stage a parallel snowboard race but insufficient to construct a snowboard cross course, even with snowmaking efforts leading up to the event date. Snowmaking has yielded less production than anticipated due to warm weather over the past few weeks.

It’s been a tough season thus far for LG Snowboard FIS World Cup schedulers. In addition to the races in Bad Gastein, parallel events scheduled in Carezza, Italy Dec. 3-4 were postponed due to a lack of snow and consistently warm temperatures. A World Cup big air set for Barcelona, Spain last month, and halfpipe and slopestyle scheduled for this March in Bardonecchia, Italy, were all canceled for economic reasons.

It’s not yet known if the canceled Bad Gastein races will be rescheduled.
