Rumford, ME – Torin Koos of Wenatchee, Wash., skiing out of the Bridger Ski Foundation, and Jessie Diggins, of Afton, Minn., picked up opening day freestyle sprint titles as the U.S. Cross Country Championships opened Tuesday at Rumford’s Black Mountain after warm weather delayed the event by a day.
The duo both repeated their freestyle titles from 2011 at Rumford. It was the sixth career U.S. title for Koos, who swept both sprints at Rumford in 2011, and second for Diggins, who will join the U.S. World Cup team next week in Milan, Italy. Dartmouth grad Dakota Blackhorse von Jess took silver and Tyler Kornfield, the 2010 classic sprint champ, bronze in men’s, with Caitlin Compton Gregg (Minneapolis, Minn.) second and Jennie Bender (Johnson, Vt.), a World Junior and U23 Team member, third as Central Cross Country (CXC) swept the women’s podium.
Organizers at Black Mountain have done an amazing job in making snow and preparing courses for the U.S. Championships after warm and snowless weather plagued the region throughout December.
Action at the U.S. Cross Country Championships continues Thursday under the revised schedule with men’s 15k and women’s 10k freestyle.
